JFJ Condemns Attack on Policeman
Monday, March 19, 2012, Kingston, Jamaica – Jamaicans for Justice (JFJ) condemns last week’s brutal attack on Corporal Anthony Watson of the New Market Police Station. Corporal Watson and his colleagues were on patrol in the Beersheeba, St Elizabeth community when he became involved in an argument with a man. After the argument ensued, the man began running from the police officers with Corporal Watson giving chase; and it was then that it was reported that the man used a machete to almost sever the Corporal’s right hand.
The attack on Corporal Watson serves to further demonstrate the dangerous conditions in which the police have to operate while on or off duty. As JFJ has stated in the past, an attack on the police while lawfully performing their duties is an attack on law and order. We also commend the police for exercising restraint in apprehending the accused even in the face of the vicious attack on their colleague. We must as a nation bring an end to this senseless bloodletting and break the cycle of violence.
JFJ again extends its sympathies to the families, friends and colleagues of the injured officer and wish for him a speedy recovery.
