For Immediate Release

JFJ in Support of Police High Command

Friday, July 6, 2010, Kingston, Jamaica – Jamaicans for Justice (JFJ) wishes the Police High Command success with its new anti-crime measures in its bid to restore law and order and stands in support of any crime fighting strategy implemented in conjunction with the Rule of Law.

Crime and violence has been a deep-rooted, long-standing problem that has adversely affected all sectors of society and has thwarted our development as a nation. As such, JFJ encourages fellow Jamaicans to play our part in assisting the police to curb this ugly crime monster. JFJ also appeals to persons with any information about criminal activities to come forward to the police and not withhold evidence.

We however hope that in that in the bid to expunge illegal activities, the Commissioner of Police, Owen Ellington, reminds the police of the importance of observing human rights. The respect for human rights of the citizenry must at all times be at the centre of any crime prevention plan and it is only through police personnel upholding human rights, that we can restore the trust that is instrumental in effective police-community relations.

Sensible, trustworthy policing, also requires sustained and effective social intervention programmes and we also call on the government to do its part in bringing these to fruition.
