Parliament is now considering the Data Protection Bill. The purpose of the Bill is to “to secure the confidentiality of personal data which may be in the possession of entities (including Government authorities) and to provide for the rights of individuals in relation to their personal data in the possession of those entities. This Bill seeks to give effect to that decision and, among other things, establishes the office of an Information Commissioner charged with the responsibility of overseeing the manner in which personal data in the possession of those entities is handled.”
Parliament has established a Joint-Select Committee to review the Bill and consider public submissions. This legislative tracker will include copies of versions of the legislation, recordings of Committee sessions, and copies of submission on the Bill. It will be updated periodically.
