Jamaicans for Justice (JFJ) and the University of the West Indies‘ (UWI) Equal Rights and Justice for All Project – with support from the European Union – will stage a free virtual training on Working with Victims of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) on July 28, 2020 at 12pm.

Statistics show that on average, at least one in four Jamaican women have experienced physical or sexual violence in their lifetime. These experiences violate and impair their enjoyment of human rights and fundamental freedoms.

In response, Jamaicans for Justice has established a targeted intervention to both provide direct services to victims and build the capacity of those who serve them. Tuesday’s virtual training is part of a series of training and sensitization activities that will enhance knowledge and transform attitudes among key service providers to victims of gender-based violence – especially those in the justice system – and the general public. It follows free legal literacy sessions on the Domestic Violence Act staged for online and community audiences.

We welcome professional service providers and anyone dedicated to eliminating gender-based violence to register for this free virtual training. Participants can expect to leave the session with:

  • an in-depth explanation of the national system for responding to GBV and key laws that govern domestic and sexual violence
  • an explanation of the process behind reporting GBV and the gaps in the present system
  • insight into the ways vulnerable populations are particularly affected by the issue of GBV
  • tools to enhance your “response-ability” and role in advocating for and protecting victims of GBV.
Jamaicans for Justice will host a free virtual training on working with victims of gender-based violence for service providers and the general public.
